JVA boys’ basketball

Harwood’s JVA boys’ basketball team played three games in the past two weeks as the season draws to a close. On Febraury 13, they played Thetford and kept up a strong defense, though the game was tough. They went on to win 47-31 with Geoffrey Kazlow scoring 18 points and Matt Fischer scoring 11. On February 15, they played Randolph and were down in the first quarter 14-11. However they managed to outscore Randolph for the rest of the game and secure the win 50-29. Nathaniel Kazlow and John Drake scored 12 and 7 points, respectively. Their most recent game was on February 18 against U-32. It was a very tough game, going back and forth and finally heading into overtime. The lead scorers were Geoffrey Kazlow (20) and Lane Clark (17). Dylan MacIsaac scored six points and put forth an admirable defensive effort. Harwood won in overtime 60-56. This brings their season record to 17-1.

JVB boys’ basketball

The JVB boys’ basketball team ended their season on February 20 with their best game of the year, a win against Lamoille. It was the first game all season that every member of the team put some points on the scoreboard, and they also succeeded in avenging a previous loss to Lamoille. The boys played great defense and earned their victory 49-32. Overall, the season was very up and down, but the team worked hard consistently and ended the season with two consecutive wins. Coach Russell Beilke said, “Great job and great effort!”

Boys’ hockey

On Monday the Harwood boys’ hockey team lost to North Country 9-2. Harwood’s Ryan Van Tuinen (assist) and Kaile Daley scored and Ben Nussbaum stopped 19 shots.

Gymnastics

The Harwood gymnastics team beat Middlebury 127.4 to 113 last Thursday.

The Nordic ski team competed in a meet at Morse Farm on Tuesday. The top Harwood finisher in the varsity boys’ race was Geordy Aitken in ninth place overall. Markus Helmken (12), Caleb Kessler (14), Sam Nishi (15), and Will Robinson (16) followed. The girls’ varsity race was led by Grace Butler in first place, who is now the speedy redhead to beat. She was followed in the top 20 by Sarah Hoyne (11), Olivia Nishi (14), Ellie Ramsey (16), Kayla O’Toole (17) and Kate Stevens (18). Overall, both the boys and girls did very well in their respective races. Next for the Nordic team is the state meet on Friday, February 24, in Jericho.
