In only its second season as a team with the Harwood Youth Hockey program, the girls' U-12 squad is the winner of the Vermont State AB Championship. The Harwood girls won the championship game over opponent Northshire in a 4-2 victory on Saturday, February 27, at the Ice Center of Washington West in Waterbury.

In the first game of the tournament, the Harwood girls were ousted by Northshire in the seventh period of play (quadruple overtime with no goalies) by a score of 0-1. Harwood then went on to win three consecutive games in the loser's bracket. They beat out Middlebury in a 7-0 game, followed by Essex in a 6-1 game and then Missisquoi in a 5-1 game before playing Northshire for the second time of the tournament.

As was expected, the meeting between Harwood and Northshire was a nail-biter of a game as the two teams were so closely matched in skill. With only nine seconds left in the third period of regulation play, Harwood's Allison Pierce skated in from center ice and scored the winning goal, bringing the final score to 2-1. As this tournament was double-elimination style and this was the first loss for the Northshire team, the Harwood girls would have to play them again and defeat them in order to win the championship title.

The third and final meeting of these two teams, in the championship game, was no less exciting than the first two games played previously in the week. Northshire came out fast and furious and scored two goals in the first two minutes of play. Harwood retaliated with a goal of its own scored by Allison Pierce with just over one minute left in the first period. Harwood's Haley Martini, assisted by Sami Fuller, scored a goal in the second period to tie the game at 2-2.

After a brief intermission the Harwood girls came out in the third period and proved to the fans that their teamwork is what made them such a fun team to watch all year. They rallied their lines and put extreme pressure on Northshire's defensive and offensive lines. With six minutes left in the period defensive player Madison Woodard skated the puck down the ice to rebound her own shot and sink the puck behind the Northshire goalie, bringing the score to 3-2. Harwood's Allison Pierce scored her second goal of the game with one minute left to play sealing Harwood's victory with a final score of to 4-2. Harwood's goalie Alison Yandow did an amazing job deflecting no less than 14 shots on goal in the championship game.
