Five Mad River teams participated in the Rutland tournament over the Memorial Day weekend. Competing teams included the U10 boys' team coached by Sarah Despres, Dan Eckstein and Jared Hosefros, the U10 girls' team coached by Steve Yandow and Drew Simmons, the U12 girls' team coached by Karen Kuiper and Dan Fuller, another U12 girls' team coached by Mike Vasseur and Spike Brodeur, and the U14 girls' team also coached by Mike Vasseur and Rick Johnson.

"The U10 boys proved themselves to be the comeback kids," stated Coach Dan Eckstein. After a sluggish start in which they lost their first three matches the team pulled it together for a rousing 2-1 victory in the fourth and final game of day one. With a win under their belts, some newfound confidence, and a good night of sleep, the team came out of the gates on Sunday raring to go. With solid teamwork, crisp passing, and some energized hustling, the boys racked up two more victories and a tie to finish the tournament at 3-3-1.

Some excellent goalkeeping by Aidan Schoellkopf, Austin Taylor and Jack Despres, along with quality team play on the field by Wilson Gubernick, Matt Harmon, Noah Eckstein, Ian Woolson, Toby Lanser, Payton Randolph, Tanner Merrill and guest player Ethan Riddell, helped propel the team to a successful tournament.

Also in Rutland, the U12 girls' team coached by duo Kuiper and Fuller, placed third at the tournament and came home carrying a trophy. The team won three out of four games and lost one tough game by a margin of only one goal.

The Rutland tournament draws teams from all over the state and out of state. There were teams that traveled from faraway Granby, CT, and Plattsburgh, NY. This well-represented tournament, consisting of premier soccer clubs and town based soccer clubs, included U10 through the U14 age groups.

The U14 team coached by Mike Vasseur and Rick Johnson also came away from Rutland with a trophy in hand. All in all these were tremendous soccer tournament results for the Mad River Valley. Come on out this coming weekend to check out more soccer excitement locally at the Mad River Park on the Airport Road in Waitsfield. Games will be played throughout the weekend.
