HU middle school basketball ends season undefeated

The undefeated season is a rarity in sports. The ability to win every game takes quite a team. Harwood's field hockey team did it this year, but another team did it as well. This is a team that hasn't had a lot of publicity, a team that has won every game by at least 10 points and a team full of 12- and 13-year-olds. That team is the seventh-grade boys' basketball team at Harwood. Very seldom do middle school teams go undefeated, especially in the way this team did.

Middle school basketball is played with fundamentals at heart -- dribbling, lay-ups and passing being the focus. But this team attacked opponents with something that is rare in this younger level of sports: long-range shooting. This season saw three players shooting over 50 percent from three-point range and the rest just as able to shoot from downtown.

The fundamentals were there as well, the ability to dribble, make smart passes and drive the lane much in the same style as kids three to four years older than them. But this isn't why the team went undefeated. One of the reasons they won so much was because they had chemistry. Seventh grade is often the first time kids from around The Valley play with each other, but with these players it's different. They have been playing as a team since early elementary school. Another reason for their success was their extreme respect for the game. They were never cocky, knowing they still have a lot to learn and are young.

The team's season proves that good basketball doesn't start in high school.
