Kyle Streeter, Waitsfield resident and eighth-grader at Harwood Union Middle School, and Kaegan Pearsall, a Harwood seventh-grader from Fayston, both placed first in their weight classes at the Vermont state wrestling championship competition held at Spaulding High School in Barre on Saturday.
Streeter held an undefeated record this year taking the first-place title in the 210-pound weight class. Pearsall held a 20-0 record, taking first in the 190-pound weight class. Pearsall is a returning state champ, having placed first in the youth championships in the heavyweight division last year. Both Streeter and Pearsall will represent Vermont in the New England regional competition being held in Hudson, Massachusetts, on March 8.
Teammate Ryan Haskins, of Waterbury, seventh-grader at Crossett Brook Middle School, placed fifth in the state in the 210-pound weight class.
Harwood Middle School Wrestling Coach Jay Lavanway and Assistant Coach Kegger Griffith are both accomplished former Harwood wrestlers. Lavanway also volunteers in the youth (K-6) program, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Harwood Union High School, and welcomes new members.
