Huge turnout for Mountaineering Race

In what may be the largest turnout in North American Randonnee race history, more than 100 skiers took part in the Mountain Hard Wear Ski Mountaineering Race on Sunday, February 8.

The race, New England's oldest United States Ski Mountaineering Association (USSMA) sanctioned mountaineering event, is a unique, cooperative effort among the Mad River Valley's neighboring ski areas. The race takes place along the Mad River Valley's Monroe Skyline.

The race began at the base of Mad River Glen where skiers ascend to the summit of General Stark Mountain before heading north onto the Long Trail over to Sugarbush's Mount Ellen. Competitors then descended the trails into the Slide Brook basin before another ascent back over to Lincoln Peak.

The race concluded with another descent to the base of the mountain. Jan Wellford scorched the course in 2 hours, 3 minutes and 18 seconds, edging out Dave Lamb by a mere 1 minute and 14 seconds to claim the men's race division. Local skier PJ Telep snatched third place. Alison Zimmer won the class of the ladies' race division field, finishing the grueling slog in 2:41:05. Jessie Janowski took second place followed by Rebecca Hartman in third place. There was also the Heavy Metal, Recreation and Veteran Pro categories. See the complete results of the race on the Mad River Glen website.
