Archeological study by Waitsfield Elementary School students

Waitsfield's fifth- and sixth-graders worked with archaeologists from the University of Vermont as part of their social studies unit examining early cultures starting with an examination of the archaeological record of the Mad River Valley.

Students and organizers have been seen in the field north of the school and beyond, examining the earth's layers and what they reveal.

Geoff Mandel led a team of students from UVM and guided WES students as they discussed how the earth's stratification tells a rich story of the Mad River Valley's past. Waitsfield teachers Mr. Van Dine, Mr. Greenleaf, and Mrs. Beattie indicated that this year's focus on archeology is particularly timely as Vermont is celebrating Archaeology Month.

Giovanna Peebles, Vermont's state archaeologist, has created local projects in part to provide students the opportunity to discover the value and excitement of archaeology. For more information about Vermont's Archaeology Month, go to .
