VSO musicians to perform in area schools

The Vermont Symphony Orchestra's "DrumShtick" percussion trio will visit schools in Warren and Waitsfield on December 19 (Warren Elementary at 9 a.m. and Waitsfield Elementary at 10:30 a.m.). The day has been made possible through the generosity of the Warren Arts Council and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.

DrumShtick is always a big hit in schools. Brian Johnson, Robert Levis and Jane Boxall have years of experience turning kids on to classical music. Their show is called "Percussion Means the World to Us," and it explores a culturally diverse repertoire and includes demonstrations of non-Western instruments. Through humor they introduce children both to general musical concepts and to the family of percussion instruments.

The VSO's traveling ensembles visit all corners of the state as part of an outreach program known as the Lois H. McClure Musicians-in-the-Schools program. These lively performances are met with enthusiasm, as the musical ambassadors spread the word that classical music can be fun.

These concerts are part of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra's statewide SymphonyKids education program, which reached over 30,000 schoolchildren last year with 283 presentations serving 195 schools in 170 different communities.

For more information on DrumShtick or the VSO's SymphonyKids programs in general, please call Eleanor Long at (800) VSO-9293, ext. 14.
