Marjorie "Marge" Mering Sherman

11/08/2007
Marjorie "Marge" Mering Sherman, 78, died on Tuesday, October 29, 2007, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital following a long illness.

Marge was born in 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Ray and Clara Mering. She attended the Sunset Hill School in Kansas City and then Middlebury College as a member of the class of 1951.

She was married to Frank Sherman in 1950. They lived in Kansas City for a few years, then settled in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, where they raised their four children. Marge became very active in the Junior League and created a nationally recognized volunteer program for the Greenwich Public Schools, recruiting and managing over 1,500 active volunteers. When she and Frank moved to West Hartford, Connecticut, in 1979, Marge had a successful second career as a real estate broker. They retired to Waitsfield, Vermont, in 1986. She was very active in the community, helping to found St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church and establishing the Green Mountain Cultural Center, an arts organization which received the Governors' Award for excellence in the arts. The Shermans relocated to New London, New Hampshire, in 2000, where Marge continued her interest in volunteering and community service. She founded a book club at Hilltop Place, was on the Bandstand Committee for the town of New London, and was a member of the Garden Club.

Marge is survived by her husband, Frank W. Sherman; two sisters, Virginia McDonald from Miami, FL, and Jean Quinn from Kansas City, MO; one brother, John Mering from Tucson, AZ; two daughters, Cathy Jane Sherman of York, PA, and Margaret Jean Sherman of Old Greenwich, CT; and two sons, James Andrew Sherman of Andover, MA, and Thomas William Sherman of Evanston, IL; three granddaughters, four grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

A service in celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 354 Main Street in Hopkinton, NH, on November 10, 2007, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Marge's memory to the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, Suite F #227, 1659 Branham Lane, San Hose, CA 95118-5226, www.coalitionforpf.org.

The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. To view the online obituary or to send condolences go to www.csnh.com.
