Returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and families spend the day at Sugarbush

The Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program and Sugarbush Resort co-hosted over 75 military Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families for a free day of skiing and snowboarding on Sunday, March 10.

The event was designed to give military families from Vermont and throughout New England the opportunity to try a new sport, meet other military families and learn more about the Home Base Program. Home Base works to heal the “invisible wounds of war” – post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury – and serves Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and families through clinical care, community education and research.

Sugarbush provided another opportunity to have fun on the slopes on Sunday – and to help New England area veterans and families. Sugarbush donated half of the proceeds from lift tickets to the Home Base Program, www.homebaseprogram.org.

"Military families continue to offer tremendous sacrifices for which we are all deeply indebted and grateful," said Win Smith, president of Sugarbush Resort. "Our ability to host the Home Base Program and veterans is an honor."

The Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program provides clinical care and support services to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and families who are affected by combat stress or traumatic brain injury (TBI) – the “invisible wounds of war.” Home Base also provides education for clinicians and community members and research to improve the understanding and treatment of post-traumatic stress and TBI.
