Habitat for Humanity plans to build fifth house

An enthusiastic crowd turned out on February 19 at the Waterbury Congregational Church to learn about the Camel's Hump Habitat for Humanity Chapter's plans for a new project in the general Waterbury area and to volunteer for jobs such as fund raising that need to take place before building can begin. The chapter has not yet been able to find an affordable parcel of land on which to build, but several locations are under consideration.

Susan Lee, chair of the Camel's Hump Chapter, described the organization and its committees and the family selection process. Habitat's mission is to provide safe, affordable housing to families who are living in overcrowded or inadequate housing. The housing is not free. Families must be able to afford to pay an interest-free mortgage and the taxes on the property. Family members work in partnership with Habitat volunteers during the construction phase and on fund-raising activities.

To date, the chapter has built four houses: one in Waterbury Center, one in Fayston and two in Warren. The mortgage payments on these houses will help to fund the next project, which could begin as soon as suitable land is found. The chapter hopes to build the next house in Waterbury or adjacent areas. If you have a lot to donate or have property for sale at a reasonable cost, call David Luce at 244-7809.

The next meeting of the Camel's Hump Chapter will be held on March 25 at 7 p.m. at the Waterbury Congregational Church on Main Street. For more information, call Susan Lee at 583-2902 or go to .
