Irene plus 1 - Waterbury to mark Irene anniversary

Dac Rowe field in Waterbury flooded from T.S. Irene

Many events are planned to mark the one-year anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene. Residents from Randall Street, Elm Street and Park Row in Waterbury will host a “Thank You Volunteer Street Party” this Saturday, August 25, from 3 to 7 p.m. Neighborhood residents want to express their gratitude to the countless friends, family and community members who lifted their spirits when they came to their aid in the days and weeks after the flood.

Volunteers helped clean up, provided food, opened their homes, organized relief efforts, directed resources their way, assisted with rebuilding, and gave much-needed hope. The neighborhood invites all who pitched in to attend the family-friendly street party which will have food, kids’ activities, music and cheer. The street will be closed. Park at the State Office Complex along Park Row. The event is rain or shine. If severe weather threatens, call 371-7087 to confirm.

On Sunday, August 26, Revs. Peter Plagge and Lisa Ransom will hold a non-sectarian worship service on the WinooskiStreetBridge at 10 a.m. “We will gather for an hour of silence, prayer, music and reflections on making peace with Irene and honoring the struggles and grief the storm caused. No matter who you are, what you believe, you are welcome to join us,” Plagge said.

The bridge will be closed to traffic during the service. In the event of rain, the memorial will move to the White Meeting House, 8 North Main Street.

Governor Peter Shumlin is traveling the state on August 28 to mark the Irene anniversary. He will be at the State Office Complex in Waterbury at 9 a.m. for a short visit.
