Police net two suspects in connection to Valley vehicle thefts

03/15/2007

An 18-year-old Waterbury Center resident and a juvenile from Waitsfield have been arrested in connection to two motor vehicle thefts in the Mad River Valley.

The two suspects were apprehended on the afternoon of March 6, state police said, shortly after a Waitsfield resident reported that he watched as his car was stolen from the Mad River Green. An investigation has connected the pair to another car that went missing from Waitsfield, February 23, according to a report from Vermont State Police.

Middlesex-based Vermont State Police said Brock Chadwick, 18, of Waterbury Center, and a 17-year-old male from Waitsfield are facing "multiple charges" in connection to the two vehicle thefts. The 17-year-old, whose name was not released by state police, was charged with grand larceny, two counts of aggravated operating a vehicle without the owner's consent, and possession of stolen property, police said.

Chadwick has been charged with operating a vehicle without the owner's consent. Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming.

Both suspects were issued citations, police said, and are scheduled to appear in Washington County District Court, May 31.

According to a police report, a Waitsfield resident contacted state police shortly after 3 p.m., March 6, after observing from his apartment his 2000 Ford Explorer "being driven away" from the Mad River Green. He then reported to police that his vehicle was headed north on Route 100.

About 30 minutes later, police said, troopers from the Middlesex barracks located the vehicle traveling on North Road in Waitsfield and arrested the 17-year-old male and Chadwick. Police said the 17-year-old was driving the car.

Police state that "further investigation revealed the 17-year-old male and Chadwick had involvement in stealing a 2003 Kia Spectra" from the Valley Players' parking lot on the evening of February 23.

An investigation into the thefts is continuing, police said.
