Sugarbush opens Lincoln Peak for the season

From the beginning, Sugarbush has always been a special mountain. I can remember when I first saw it and fell immediately in love, 42 years ago. Now there is a new look to it, in fact a $60 million "new look." With the building of the new Gate House Lodge, Clay Brook Residences and the Timbers Restaurant, Sugarbush has stepped into the 21st century. Lots of folks claim that Stowe is the capital of Eastern skiing, but for me Sugarbush always had the best terrain with the best skiing. From beginning skier to expert, it rolls and flows so that no matter your skiing level, you are always comfortable on the mountain. Now one of the missing links has been added to the mountain -- a place to stay.

The Clay Brook Residences, which feature a big red barn-like structure, are complete with a silo. The silo contains some well thought out designs, with up to five bedrooms, overlooking the slopes and more. The building has beds to accommodate 420 people, underground parking, ski concierge, two outdoor hot tubs, fitness room, a game room and underground parking. Outside, there is a heated year-round swimming pool.

 The new Gate House is also well thought out; the top floor has increased eating space and an up-to-date Food Court. Downstairs is the Castle Rock Pub, Guest Services Desk, ticket booths, ski shop and locker space to store your gear while skiing.

Last but not least is the Timbers Restaurant, a year-round 130-seat restaurant that has a 45-foot post and beam ceiling, a curved cement bar, stone fireplace as well as indoor and outdoor dining. They will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner year round and will host weddings and conferences.

But it is only the beginning; by the fall of 2007 there will be a Guest Services Building. Three new buildings will be added later and reconnect to the nearby old village featuring Chez Henri. Oh yes, I almost forgot, the new parking lot is now paved, so no more driving over potholes on your way to the mountain.
