To The Editor:
When I was cleaning out my desk today preparing for retirement, I came across a file marked "fun" where I toss things that amuse me. Well, the attached has made me laugh twice. Note the date. Not sure who the sheriff was....but I wrote the story back then and saved it. And it only took 18-plus years to build a new bridge.
August 5, 1995
About a week ago, the board of adjustment, a few selectmen, honchos from the state transportation agency, fish and game and a poobah from the river protection group, about 15 in all, were standing on the bridge by Kingsbury Store. The bridge crosses over the Mad River and was slated to be realigned and rebuilt.
Each group had an opinion on how big it should be, where it should go, what it should cost and how to best protect the wildlife from the proposed changes. In short, there was a lot of shucking and jiving going on while one group tried to assert its opinion without alienating all of the others.
The negotiations were broken up abruptly by the arrival of the local sheriff on two wheels. He had been sent by a neighbor who could see the bridge from his house and he was there to apprehend the people "smoking dope and blocking the bridge."
Not too far from the truth, eh?
