To The Editor:
I was horrified today to read in this week's paper the article on Page 29, "The Vermont Country Store: everything you didn't know you needed." What ever happened to buy local? My mother opened The Store 49 years ago this fall. She saw a need in the community and strove to carry items that would appeal to not only the local residents of the Mad River Valley but to the second-home owners as well. The article mentions many items that we also carry in The Store, including pineapple slicers, mortar and pestles, egg poachers and many varieties of Vermont jam.
It is amazing to me that our local paper would find it necessary to send people out of town to shop for items that can be purchased locally, especially on what we hope will be a busy weekend. We have a serious problem in our Valley with many shops, including ours, feeling the pinch of the economy. With so few choices for tourists, can we really afford to suggest going elsewhere?
While I agree that the Vermont Country Store is a wonderful place with lots to choose from... I think if you visited our store you might use the same quote "I dare you to leave without buying something" and we always offer coffee, espresso or tea and gift wrap for free.
