To The Editor:
I saw Vermont State Police on patrol in The Valley following Hurricane Irene and then read that the sheriff's department was also on the job in The Valley. A feeling of safety and security is an important aspect of recovery from any disaster. Law and order help us to maintain a feeling that part of our lives has not been destroyed in this natural disaster.
The police presence serves to show would-be looters and others who would
take advantage of our vulnerability that the rule of law is in force
and maintained regardless of the destruction we have endured. The
criminal element and scofflaws need to be concerned. The rest of us can
go on with our business of restoring our community with the secure
feeling that law enforcement is on the job covering our backs.
