GMP considering herbicide spraying

To The Editor:

Green Mountain Power, in their January bill insert, states that they are considering using herbicides again after 25 years.

Their stated rationale is that chainsaws and vehicles used for manual clearing risk oil spills. This is ludicrous. However careless or badly maintained the vehicles, the risk could not compare with foliar spraying of vegetation up to eight feet in height and Garlon herbicide mixed with oil is used near wetlands.

They say herbicides have improved vastly since they last used them about 25 years ago. They can use less because they are stronger, but they are even more deadly to birds, wildlife, and any humans (such as hunters) who stray into their area of use.

In this time of the disappearance of species, loss of songbirds, water pollution and climate change, ALL stress on the environment should be avoided.

Please let Green Mountain Power know of your feelings on this matter. You contact D. Schnure at 1-888-865-4672 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
