To The Editor:
I was sorry to learn that Malcolm Appleton had been injured while riding his bike.
I was rather shocked, however, to learn that he had podiumed three times. I hope that he didn't do this in public.
At one time I owned a house that had been designed and built by Mr. Appleton and I bought some furniture from his wife. They both appeared to be very respectable people, but I guess the old slogan "appearances can be deceiving" holds true again.
It's bad enough when athletes medal in public and seem to feel no embarrassment, but I feel that when normal appearing people begin to podium in front of large crowds, and brag about it, the boundaries of good taste have indeed been breached.
