To The Editor:
This is in invitation for the exciting movement concerning global warming, Step It Up 2007 on April 14, inspired by Bill McKibben and others. The Big Picture is supporting this movement by having an event from 12 to 3 p.m., which sounds great. I am wondering if there is some way that people who do not want to drive to Waitsfield could still participate and support the Big Picture event. I would be happy to organize a local event for persons in Warren, in particular near Blueberry Lake. I know numbers make a difference in the media, so maybe the projects in Warren could then be added to the one being organized by The Big Picture to make a greater number but eliminate some CO2's from not driving to Waitsfield.
I participated several years ago in mapping the streambed health of the Mad River Watershed and know of some areas in Warren which had serious erosion conditions. Maybe we could help with a stream bank erosion project closer to home. I think it might also be a good idea to begin a legislative request for the federal government to transfer at least 20 percent of the federal subsidies, which now go to oil and gas, into solar and wind power to make solar power, for example, affordable for low and middle income people. We could obtain signatures door to door without getting into a car and send it via email to some central place.
I'm open to ideas even if it is that all meeting in one place, Waitsfield, would be more effective.
