Right to express views

To The Editor:

Re the mysterious disappearance of campaign signs from Win Smith's yard, we should remember that Mr. Smith, like all of us in this noble experiment that we call American democracy, has the right to be wrong. He also has the right to express his views publicly and privately, even though others may vehemently disagree with him. As Americans we believe that the remedy for speech that we disagree with is more speech (a letter to the editor, working for your own candidate, etc.), not vandalism.

These days it seems like there are people who think that savvy political tactics include such things as pounding on walls and doors during the recounting of votes to disrupt the count, jamming the phone lines of a political party to interfere with their getting out the vote, and stealing campaign signs.

As a society we are better than that, and if we are to live in civil harmony (as we must), it behooves us all to live up to our highest common denominators of civility and respect, not our lowest.
